About Rancho Santa Fe, CA

Rancho Santa Fe is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California, United States, within the San Diego metropolitan area. The population was 3,117 at the 2010 census. The CDP is primarily residential with a few shopping blocks, a middle and elementary school, and several restaurants. Rancho Santa Fe borders the Fairbanks Ranch gated community to the southeast and Solana Beach to the southwest.

Rancho Santa Fe has a rich history and was established in 1928 as a country residential community with an emphasis on agriculture and on preserving the rural landscapes. While the area is commonly referred to as the Covenant, the term refers to an agreement among property owners to preserve and maintain the character of the community and its landscape, and to uphold the quality of future architecture. The agreement came to be known simply as the Covenant and now refers not only to the principal governing document, but also to the community itself. Today, historic Rancho Santa Fe encompasses roughly 10 square miles or 6,730 acres and is home to around 4,300 residents. Near the center of the Covenant is the Village of Rancho Santa Fe, with shops, restaurants, other commercial businesses and the historic Rancho Santa Fe Inn. The Rancho Santa Fe School District campus is located adjacent to the Village. The Roger Rowe School, for elementary and middle school aged students, features a state-of-the-art campus, a performing arts center, classroom labs and more. The acclaimed and exclusive Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club is located in the heart of the community. The Max Behr-designed 6,700-yard par-72 private course is open to Covenant members and their guests. Opening in 1929, the golf club served as the original site for 1930s-era clambakes hosted by Bing Crosby, an early resident of the Covenant. Most of the Ranch is beautiful rolling topography with spacious low-density, large-lot residential development where the average lot size is more than two acres. Looping through the pristine countryside and alongside the golf course, a private equestrian and hiking trail network runs throughout the community. The exclusive, secure, rural character of the community, combined with its proximity to the ocean are what set this community apart as being a highly desirable place to live.

Because Rancho Santa Fe is located more inland than some of the other coast communities we service, it offers a number of challenges but also provides some of the most undisturbed canvases for our work. We have worked on numerous projects over the years in Rancho Santa Fe. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Rancho Santa Fe has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csa" on climate maps. The climate of Rancho Santa Fe is, for the most part, typical of the San Diego metropolitan area though its higher elevation and inland location lends itself to larger temperature variations.

Rancho Santa Fe Pool and Landscaping Regulations

San Diego, like many other cities in California, has put into place building codes and regulations regarding water efficient landscaping. As a Carlsbad-based landscape and pool contractor, Green Land Co. is familiar with these rules and regulations and always meet and/or exceed these requirements. We are proud to work with the Rancho Santa Fe clients in creating water efficient landscaping projects.

Rancho Santa Fe's water efficient landscaping regulations are set forth in the Rancho Santa Fe Regulatory Code

Under Rancho Santa Fe's Regulatory Code, certain approvals are required to start landscaping and pool projects. Those regulations are contained in the Rancho Santa Fe Regulatory Code Chapter 42. Rancho Santa Fe requires all landscaping plans relating to residential construction require review and approval by the Art Jury with right of appeal to the Board of Directors pursuant to the Governing Documents. All landscaping plans relating to commercial construction require Art Jury review and recommendation and Board of Directors’ approval pursuant to the Governing Documents. The approved landscaping must also be completed within six months of substantial completion of the construction of a new residence or commercial building.

Rancho Santa Fe also has a guide for protecting existing habitat and creating new habitat by choosing local native plants, climate adapted non-natives and avoiding invasive plants. Utilizing integrated pest management with least toxic methods as the first course of action. (Ord. CS-294 § 1, 2016; Ord. CS-175 § 1, 2012)

Rancho Santa Fe also maintains a low water tree list, which we have consulted on numerous ocassions. This ensures that your landscaping design is both beautiful and environmentally friendly. The latest low water use tree list can be found on the Rancho Santa Fe Associate site.
